Developing Artistry in Students

Have you ever had a student leave your studio enthused about practicing only to return the following week having made little progress? If so, this session is for you! One of the essential skills that we teach our students is how to practice and develop autonomy. During the workshop we will explore the latest research in self-regulation, watch actual students practice at home, and discuss strategies that can be successfully used by students at home.

Students who learn to sight-read successfully enjoy learning new music and are better equipped to make music with others. This workshop explores specific strategies that teachers can use to help students of all ages develop effective and efficient sight-reading skills. We will look at excellent commercially-available sight-reading books and discuss ways to boost our personal teaching libraries with essential materials. 

When does artistry begin? It has been argued that children should begin to explore and develop musical artistry at the first lesson. Building on techniques employed by master piano pedagogues such as Frances Clark, Richard Chronister, Marvin Blickenstaff, and music educators from across the globe, Pike shows how to engage 21st-century children in making deliberate artistic choices, and how to encourage students to give confident and musically sophisticated performances from the earliest stages of music study. 

Although most students begin piano lessons with exuberance, it can be difficult for many to maintain motivation to practice and work on challenging skills as time goes on and as music becomes more challenging. In the session, Pike explores key factors in motivation theory and looks at specific things that teachers can do during the lesson to increase student motivation throughout the learning process. This workshop features tips and tools for developing and maintaining students' intrinsic motivation for music study.
